You already know that social media platforms shows you content based off of what you engage with. You’ve realized that your content that you see can be completely different from your friends/family content. But what most people don’t realize is that this isn’t just about seeing different content anymore. Researchers created fake teen male accounts and had them engage with general "masculinity" content on TikTok. After just five days, the TikTok algorithm was presenting four times as many videos with misogynistic content such as objectification, sexual harassment or discrediting women.

Five days. From general interest in masculinity topics to a feed dominated by content that objectifies and devalues women.

This isn't unique to gender issues. Research has shown how algorithms drive misogynistic content towards young men, whether they seek it or not. The same rapid amplification occurs across health misinformation, conspiracy theories, and extreme dietary content.

Understanding these research findings reveals three critical ways algorithmic personalization affects society:

The algorithm doesn't plant ideas in your head, it cranks up the emotional volume on ideas you already have.
